Does Faster Feedback Actually Improve Student Performance? The Evidence
Timing is not a courtesy, it is a condition for feedback to work at all. What the research says, and what fast enough actually means.

Most institutions believe that faster feedback is better. Few have examined whether the evidence actually supports that belief, or what faster needs to mean to make a difference. The research is clear, but the conclusion is more precise than the intuition: speed alone is not what drives performance gains. What matters is whether feedback arrives while students can still act on it. That condition changes what fast enough actually means in practice.
Does faster feedback improve performance?
Yes, consistently, but with an important qualification. The benefit depends not on raw speed but on whether the feedback reaches the student within the same learning cycle. Feedback received before the next piece of related work is due functions as formative input. Feedback received after that point has limited effect on performance. What does the research say about feedback speed?

Nicol and Macfarlane-Dick established seven principles of good feedback practice in 2006, with timeliness listed explicitly as a condition rather than a feature. Their framework requires that feedback enables students to close the gap between current and desired performance. That closure requires time to act.
Chickering and Gamson identified prompt feedback as one of seven principles of good undergraduate practice as far back as 1987. The principle has been validated consistently across four decades and diverse institutional contexts. It is not a new idea. It is an old one that most institutions have not yet operationalised. How quickly does feedback need to arrive?
Within the same learning cycle. This is more precise than as fast as possible and more demanding than before the module ends.
Consider a student who submits a 2,000-word essay in week four of a twelve-week module. If feedback arrives in week six, before the week seven essay, it has the potential to change how the student approaches the next piece of work. The student can correct misconceptions, apply structural suggestions, and strengthen referencing while the task is still salient. That is formative feedback.
If feedback arrives in week nine, after the week seven essay has already been submitted, it arrives too late to influence that piece of work. The student may adjust for future work, but the primary learning opportunity has passed. The feedback is not formative at that point: it is historical.
The structural problem
The typical UK higher education turnaround is 15 to 20 working days. For a twelve-week module with multiple submission points, feedback from the first assessment often arrives after the second assessment has been submitted. This is not a minor inefficiency. It structurally prevents feedback from being formative, regardless of how well written it is.
Why does timing matter more than most institutions assume?

That capacity develops through repeated cycles of submission, feedback, and adjustment. Delayed feedback interrupts the cycle. None of these mechanisms are accessible when feedback arrives outside the learning cycle. Timeliness is not a nicety: it is a precondition for the mechanisms that produce performance gains.
What happens when feedback arrives late?
Several measurable effects follow from late feedback, and none of them are neutral. Students disengage from the feedback. Research consistently shows that students are least likely to read and act on feedback that arrives after the next assessment has been submitted. The emotional and cognitive investment in the previous piece of work has diminished, and attention has shifted to current demands.
Misconceptions persist across submissions. A student who holds a structural misunderstanding of argumentation and receives feedback on it in week nine will have submitted two essays using that flawed approach before the correction arrives. Early feedback prevents the compounding of errors.
The formative function of assessment disappears entirely. When the assessment and feedback cycle operates too slowly, what is designed as formative assessment functions as summative record-keeping.
